# Claude Desktop

> Connect MMW to the Claude Desktop app through the local mmw-agent.

On this page you will connect MMW to the Claude Desktop app, find its configuration file and check that memory works.

## What you get

- The `remember`, `search`, `forget`, `validate_memory`, `gateway_call` and `mmw_sync_status` tools in Claude Desktop conversations.
- The same memory as Claude Code, Cursor and claude.ai with the same key.

Session history is not uploaded for Claude Desktop: the agent uploads Claude Code and Codex sessions only.

## Prerequisites

- An MMW API key (starts with `mmw_`); see the [Quickstart](/start/quickstart/).
- Claude Desktop for macOS or Windows.
- Python 3.11+ and [uv](https://docs.astral.sh/uv/) (the `uvx` command).

## Where the config lives

```text
~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
```

```text
%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
```

There is no official Claude Desktop for Linux, and we have not tested unofficial builds. On Linux use [Claude Code](/clients/claude-code/) or [claude.ai](/clients/claude-web/).

The easiest way to open the file is from the app itself: Settings → Developer → Edit Config.

## Setup

1. Open Settings → Developer → Edit Config.

2. Add an `mmw` block to `mcpServers`. If the file already lists other servers, add `mmw` next to them without removing anything.

   ```json title="claude_desktop_config.json"
   {
     "mcpServers": {
       "mmw": {
         "command": "uvx",
         "args": ["--from", "https://app.mmwhub.tech/downloads/mmw-agent/mmw_agent-0.1.4-py3-none-any.whl", "mmw-agent"],
         "env": {
           "MMW_API_KEY": "mmw_your_key",
           "MMW_ENDPOINT": "https://mcp.mmwhub.tech"
         }
       }
     }
   }
   ```

3. Save the file and **fully quit** Claude Desktop (from the app menu, not just by closing the window), then start it again.

## Verify

1. In a new conversation open the tools menu (the icon below the input box): you should see the `mmw` server with `remember`, `search`, `forget`, `validate_memory`, `gateway_call` and `mmw_sync_status`.

2. Ask:

   ```text
   Remember in MMW: staging is deployed with the systemd unit app-staging. Fact key: deploy-staging.
   ```

   Claude may ask for permission to call `remember`; once approved, it confirms the record was saved.

3. Open a new conversation and ask:

   ```text
   How do we deploy staging? Check MMW.
   ```

   Expected answer: Claude calls `search` and replies that staging is deployed with `app-staging`.

## Common problems

Desktop apps often cannot see a `uvx` installed in your home directory. Put the full path in `command`: on macOS and Linux find it with `which uvx`, on Windows with `where uvx`. Also make sure Python 3.11+ is installed.

Claude Desktop reads its configuration only at start-up. Quit the app completely and start it again. If the server still does not appear, check the JSON for extra or missing commas.

Use [claude.ai](/clients/claude-web/) in the browser with the OAuth connector; there is nothing to install.

You can check the agent separately from the app with `mmw-agent status`; see [Agent troubleshooting](/agent/troubleshooting/).
